Julia’s Review:

“Hi. It’s Julia. I’m 25 years old, and I’m from Berlin, Germany. I played professional handball for over 12 years in Germany, and then I quit. I was looking for a new sport to play.

I was always a team player, but now I want to try something that I can do alone. So I was just typing into Google “sports camps abroad,” and then Kombat Group was the first group that just plopped off, and I looked it up. It was really amazing. They had quite a lot of experiences there and recommendations.

So it was just easy. I said okay. Let’s do it. Sometimes, it is like when God says: “here you have it”, and then I say, “Okay. I take it”.

So I took it, I took the chance, and I’m really happy about this. It’s not my first travelling alone. I travelled alone to some cities in Europe, but only for a few days. So it’s my big first vacation travelling on my own.

A good friend of mine just inspired me because she took a break from work and just travelled around Asia the whole time alone. And she recommended it. I looked up her videos, and I said, “Okay. What you can do, I can do also.” I was really afraid because also my parents are a little bit strict and said, “Be aware of this, be aware of this, be aware of this”.

But then, when I just got off the airplane here in Bangkok, they were all so friendly, nice, and kind. They were just smiling the whole time, and I felt so welcome and so safe here. Berlin isn’t as safe as this place. And that was also the reason why I joined this Muay Thai class: to be a little bit more self-confident and have ways to defend myself when something happens.

Every time we train here and learn another defense tactic or punch in the right way, I feel safer. I started going around with more energy, power, and self-confidence. It really helped me, and I think I will do more female travelling alone because of this. I feel safe here.

Last evening, I looked up where the Muay Thai studio next to my hometown. I wanna practice in Germany, too.

When we started the first lesson, it was in the morning. They were very, very kind and friendly and showed me the basics. The the other ones were doing other stuff, but I had, like, a private session in there, and that was really good. They showed me the basics so that I could catch up to the other ones. And every training, you just came back and recognized the basics, and then you go step by step by step. And it’s really good because when you don’t know what to do, you just go to the basics and start doing it again.

I really love the training, and I’ll recommend it for everyone to do this. When you are tired, go to the morning classes and go to the evening classes because in the evening classes, we are also doing sparring, and you’re gonna practice what you did in the morning, the technical stuff.

I’m a lucky person because we have two Swiss girls here too, so when I have something up in my mind that I can’t explain in English, I can go back to German or Swiss German and we can talk. I feel really connected to these people and also with the trainers.

Every trainer here is really supportive. When you need something, they help you and don’t just put you away and say do your own thing. We are sitting together, eating the meals together.

The people who really are Thai and live here are really friendly. They don’t grab you and say, “Come with me. Do this. Do that.” Like in Germany or Berlin, especially.

No. They are just really open-minded and friendly. They ask you something and are really interested in you, and I’ve never had these feelings before. I would really recommend that everyone grab a taxi or a bus, and just walk around.

I would really recommend it, and I would really love to come back to Kombat Group and train more Muay Thai. Maybe not in the beginner class, then in the advanced class.

The most important things you need are something against mosquitoes and sun cream. I have a really bad sunburn here. Drink a lot of water and just be open-minded about everything. Don’t be shy. Just be open. Ask when you need something. That’s really important. Tell the trainers when you can’t train anymore: I have had a lot of blisters and told them, “No, I can’t.” And they were just, “okay, take your break”.

And just try everything you can. Do ice bathing. You will enjoy feeling free and maybe like a newborn baby. Try other classes. Be open up with the other people. There are many people who speak English and are from other countries, and you can be supportive and find another traveler and go around with them.

I think I found my new passion. I really love Muay Thai now, and I think it’s even better than the handball that I played. Oh, I get a little bit emotional. And I really love the trainer. So, thank you, Sing. You just got me into Muay Thai. Thank you so much.”

Conclusion:

Julia’s stay at Kombat Group was a transformative experience that not only enhanced her physical fitness but also significantly boosted her self-confidence and sense of security. The supportive environment, expert trainers, and the sense of community helped Julia discover a new passion for Muay Thai, which she plans to continue back in Germany.
